However, sometimes design “challenged” rooms result in the most beautiful and interesting creative solutions. After years of designing projects, I've learned a few things about how to make a dark space appear lighter and brighter.

Here are 3 ideas to help you to expand the feel of your space:

No. 1: Bring life to your space with greenery, flowers or plants

Plants can be a great help to give life to any space. Whether it's a windowless bathroom or a small home office, adding trees, potted plants, or even real or faux flowers can change the mood.

No. 2: Includes mirrors and reflective materials:

It's no secret that mirrors and other reflective materials make your space appear larger, but they can also make the space appear brighter. Even metal fixtures can bounce any light that may be in the room to expand it.

Designer Tip: If you have a window in your room with an adjacent blank wall, placing a mirror there can almost double the feel of the window in your space.

No. 3: Layer lighting.

Lighting can make or break a room, especially one you want to feel lighter. Lighting design isn't just about a fancy chandelier, and sometimes a floor lamp or eye-level lamp can make all the difference.

There is nothing that enhances an environment more than the light of a lamp, simply unbeatable!

Designer tip: opt for fabric shades if you want to multiply the light from your lamp.
